What is fragrance load?
Fragrance load — also called fragrance percentage or scent load — is the weight of fragrance oil expressed as a percentage of the wax weight. It is always measured by weight, not by volume, because fragrance oil density varies.
Formula: Fragrance oil (oz) = Wax weight (oz) × (Fragrance % ÷ 100)
Recommended fragrance loads by wax type
| Wax type | Typical range | Max safe load |
|---|---|---|
| Golden 464 Soy | 6–10 % | 10 % |
| NatureWax C-3 | 6–10 % | 10 % |
| Paraffin (container) | 6–12 % | 12 % |
| Coconut wax | 6–10 % | 10 % |
| Beeswax | 3–6 % | 6 % |
| Coconut-soy blend | 6–10 % | 10 % |
What happens if you add too much fragrance oil?
Exceeding a wax's maximum fragrance load causes:
- Seeping — fragrance oil pools on the surface or leaks from the jar
- Wet spots — adhesion failures between wax and glass
- Poor hot throw — excess oil does not bind to the wax properly
- Fire hazard — fragrance oil that has not bonded to wax is flammable
Measuring fragrance oil accurately
Always use a digital scale accurate to 0.1 g (0.01 oz). Never measure fragrance oil by volume using measuring cups — different oils have different densities and the volume measurement will be wrong. The Candle Cost Calculator can help you price your fragrance oil cost per batch once you have your formula set.
